Last summer I spent a lot of time developing new work for Witness, my first-ever presentation in London. It’s been wonderful to see the work take shape, and Witness was warmly received during the walk-in preview on 10 September.

The presentation consists of two large-scale models of places where people come together: one oriented towards the outside, the other towards the inside. Places from which to witness an event, that took or can take place. Places that might refer to buildings or structures from the past, the present, or perhaps even the future. On the wall are two smaller works: models of two witness stands. Their distinct forms relate closely to the two larger pieces.

It’s especially exciting to see that, alongside the ‘Congratulations!’ and ‘Great show!’, people are also engaging with Witness on a more conceptual level.

‘Casper ter Heerdt’s model artworks and architectural objects in Witness evoked some interesting ideas about people’s interactions, dialogues, debating, monologues, speaking, shouting or cheering in arenas, parliaments and courts, outward and internalising speaking interrogations in constructed places absent of people.’

Tension is open on Fridays and Saturdays, 11am–5pm UK time. Witness is on view until 17 October.
